A fire alarm system has to be designed for the building it is going into. Not bought off a shelf and fitted, designed. The category of system, where the detectors go, what type they are and how the whole thing is zoned all follow from what the building is and who is in it.

Getting the category right
BS 5839 sets out categories, and choosing the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake we see.
In brief:
• M is a manual system, call points only, no automatic detection.
• L1 to L5 are systems for protecting life, with L1 covering the whole building and L5 designed around a specific risk.
• P1 and P2 are for protecting property, usually driven by an insurer rather than by law.
Which you need depends on the building, its use, the escape routes and what your fire risk assessment says. We will tell you which category is appropriate rather than selling you the largest system we can.

Wireless or hard wired
Both have their place. Hard wired is generally the default for new build and for anywhere the cable runs are straightforward.
Wireless comes into its own in listed buildings, occupied premises where disruption matters, and anywhere running cable would mean lifting historic fabric or redecorating afterwards.
We install both.

• Commissioning, testing and handover
• A BS 5839 certificate and a log book, which is what an inspector or insurer will ask to see
New build and construction
We work on construction projects across Plymouth and the wider South West, including temporary systems during the build and permanent installation before handover. If you need certification to a programme date, tell us the date and we will tell you honestly whether we can hit it.
After it is installed
BS 5839 recommends a service at least every six months. We can service the system or put it on a maintenance contract so it never lapses. A new system with no servicing behind it will not satisfy an insurer for long.
