How Much Does a Stairlift Service Cost?

How Much Does a Stairlift Service Cost? | AMS Group

A stairlift service costs £70 with AMS Group, currently reduced from £85. That covers any make of stairlift, straight or curved, whether we installed it or not.

We have put the number first because it is the question people ring up asking, and because very few companies in this trade will tell you before they have taken your details. Here is what you get for it, and why it is worth having.

What a service actually covers

It takes about an hour. An engineer checks the battery condition and how well the unit is charging, which is the single most common cause of a stairlift failing. Then the safety sensors and obstruction cut outs, the seat belt, seat, armrests and footrest, the condition and lubrication of the rail, the gearbox and drive mechanism, the remote controls and call stations, the emergency stop and manual lowering, and the fixings into the stair treads.

You are left with a written record of what was checked and anything worth keeping an eye on. That record matters more than people think, because it is what a manufacturer will ask for if you ever need to claim on a warranty.

How often a stairlift needs servicing

Once a year for a stairlift in normal domestic use. More often if it is in a care home, an HMO or anywhere it runs many times a day, and more often again if the user is heavier or the staircase is long, because both put more load through the drive.

If you rent a stairlift from us, servicing is already included and you do not need to book anything or pay anything extra.

Why £70 is cheaper than not doing it

Almost every breakdown we attend was preventable. Stairlift batteries typically last three to five years and they fail gradually, giving plenty of warning to anyone looking for it. Rails wear. Safety switches degrade. A service catches all of that while it is still a small job.

There is also the warranty question. Most manufacturer warranties require a documented annual service, so skipping it can quietly invalidate cover you have already paid for. People usually discover this at the worst possible moment, which is when something expensive has gone wrong.

And then there is the part that does not appear on any invoice. Being stuck on the stairs, or stuck upstairs, is frightening and undignified, particularly for someone already unwell. An annual service is a modest price for that not happening.

We service stairlifts we did not install

You are not tied to whoever fitted your stairlift. We service every make we come across, straight or curved, and a good proportion of the stairlifts we look after in Plymouth and across Devon were installed by companies that have since been taken over, gone out of business or stopped covering the South West.

If you have inherited a stairlift with a house, or nobody can remember when it was last looked at, it is worth having someone check it before you need it in a hurry.
